1. Stimulated reflective thought.
As I wrote about in an earlier post a conversation which I held with a contact on twitter created reflective thoughts and gave me an opportunity to go away look and analyse my practice as a midwife. This helped in the professional development of my portfolio as we have to demonstrate reflective practice.
2. Developed connections across professionals
It is very easy as a midwife to become isolated from fellow professionals especially those in the medical field. Creating connections with those in the nursing and medical profession actually has enhanced my ability to understand a different perspective and hopefully I`ve managed to portray a midwifery perspective and generally spread a little understanding.
3. Given me useful information
When people share the links of what they are reading it gives me an opportunity to read something I may not otherwise have read. Using http://tinyurl.com/ shortens your link to make it easier to fit in the 140 character limit.
4. Developed my editing skills
Sticking in the 140 character limit means you have to be creative, learn to edit and means that you have to decide what it is you wish to communicate being concise. I don’t always get it right but it is fun trying.
5. Enhanced my knowledge of Web 2.0 tools
Looking at useful things that people are working with has opened up a whole new world for me and enhanced my computer skills. It is extraordinary how you can put a question out over the network and someone will always answer and be helpful.
Yes, it is potentially addictive seeing and reading what others are saying and for those who are especially nosey it is difficult to shut down just in case you miss something important.
Yes, my husband sighs when he sees me turn on the computer and he hears the hoot of tweetdeck but during the rugby he is grateful because it gives him a quiet life to watch it and I get the thrill of moaning about it on twitter and updating everyone with the score. So in addition I could suggest it has actually enhanced my relationship!

I love your reasons:)
We'll have to revisit in a few months to see if still true!
AM
Now I have a new job that sucks up all my time and emotional energy I do much less blogging than I did, which was my major communication method. So I use Twitter to keep my connections alive in between blog posts.
